So I was shopping for books to fill up my new expanded shelf space. The first place I walked into was this dingy-looking used bookstore with the gauche name of ABC BOOKS and rows of 80s sci-fi paperbacks yellowing gently outside. The literature section was surprisingly good, though, and I tackled it with gusto. Within fifteen minutes, the stack in my arms reached critical mass and I had begun planning my exit strategy when a final scan lit on a volume by Jeanette Winterson. It turned out to be a ratty hardcover of Gut Symmetries, marked for quick sale at $3.29.

I flip it open. And find that IT'S BEEN AUTOGRAPHED.

Today, I:

Had a concert pianist (Gordon Murray, his namecard said) playing a grand piano in a subway station turn to me and ask me if I liked his Debussy,

Ate escargot pizza two tables away from Michael Cunningham,

Recounted this to an appreciative Michael Cunningham, and

Came out with a photograph and an autographed copy of The Hours

My life is complete.
